Our Story

The Beginning

One family.
Seventy-eight years.

In 1947, Khushi Mohammed opened a small curry house near Edinburgh University — Punjabi stews for a newly-arrived community, and for the curious locals who wandered in. The word for happiness gave the place its name.

His wife, Hamida — Mrs Khushi — took the kitchen and ran it for thirty years, raising seven children behind the pass and cooking the dishes the family still makes today. Through new addresses, new generations and a fire that might have ended it all, Khushi’s kept going.

In 2025 it came home to the university quarter, steps from where it began. Same family. Same welcome. Come hungry, leave happy.

The Long Way Home

Eight homes.
Back near where it began.

For seventy-eight years Khushi’s has moved across Edinburgh’s Old Town — through fire, through generations — and in 2025 it came home to the university quarter, steps from the very first kitchen.

  1. 1947–1953

    Lothian Street

    Khushi Mohammed opens a small curry house near the university — Punjabi stews for a newly-arrived community, and curious locals.

  2. 1954–1968

    College Street

    The name spreads through the city.

  3. 1969–1972

    Candlemaker Row

    Still in the heart of the Old Town.

  4. 1973–2001

    Drummond Street

    Mrs Khushi takes the kitchen — three decades as master chef, seven children raised behind the pass.

  5. 2001–2005

    Potterrow

    A new generation steps in.

  6. 2006–2008

    Victoria Street

    Lost to fire in 2008. The family did not let it end there.

    Rebuilt, not undone
  7. 2010–2018

    Antigua Street

    Rebuilt, reopened, carrying on.

  8. 2025 —

    Forrest Road

    Back near where it began, in the university quarter. The next chapter is yours.
